The events of May 1968 left an indelible mark on the public imagination, both in France and abroad. Rallying under the call, "Soyez réalistes, demandez l'impossible" (Be realistic, demand the impossible), massive protests and labour strikes swept across the country effectively bringing the nation to a halt.

Despite taking place half a century ago and half a world away, the events of May '68 have an unlikely connection to a number of artists and musicians in Saskatoon. For the members of Slow Down Molasses, the events can be traced back to a personal archive of photographs taken by singer Tyson McShane's father. The images of street protests and political unrest inspired much of their critically acclaimed album, Burnt Black Cars.

To mark the 50th anniversary of May '68, Remai Modern has invited Slow Down Molasses to perform with a screening of the film Ciné-Tracts, a series of silent documentary shorts that depict the political turmoil in Paris. Ciné-Tracts–which include contributions from notable French filmmakers like Jean-Luc Godard, Chris Marker and Alain Renais–offered a critical alternative to the mainstream media coverage of the events.

Slow Down Molasses–comprised of singer/guitarist Tyson McShane, drummer Jordan Kurtz, bassist Chris Morin and guitarist/keyboardist Aaron Scholz–will be joined by a cast of guest artists. Zoey Roy is a spoken word poet, award-winning activist and community leader, who is also a sought-after speaker, educator and performer. Kay the Aquanaut is one of Canada's foremost voices in the world of independent hip hop. His politically charged album Yeah, Riot!!! was written during a residency in Paris and released in 2016. Steph Cameron is a folk singer and songwriter from Saskatoon whose debut record was long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize. This unique collaboration will feature pieces from Burnt Black Cars, alongside the sights and inspired sounds of the chaos and turbulence of May '68.
