Linda Young

Recorded April 6, 2021 - Lyndon J. Linklater is joined for an online fireside chat with special guest artist Linda Young. Linda is a wife, mother, grandmother, artist, and culture warrior from the Onion Lake Cree Nation in Northwest Saskatchewan. Her art piece entitled kôhkominawak (Our Grandmothers), 2008 is included in the exhibition: An apology, a pill, a ritual and a resistance.

Linda Young bio: Linda Young is a nehiyaw-iskwew from Onion Lake Cree Nation, Treaty 6 Territory. She speaks Plains Cree ‘y’ dialect. She is the eldest in her family of 6 brothers and 5 sisters. She has 2 daughters and 3 sons, 13 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Linda is married to Grant and they have been together for 41 years. Linda’s introduction to Western education started at Saint Anthony’s Roman Catholic Indian Residential School in Onion Lake. She went on to take upgrading and then entered university as a mature student. To date, she has received her Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) a Master's in Education (M.Ed.) and is currently in the Ph.D. program at the U of S. Whenever Linda works on an art project she remembers her mom’s advice to memorize the strength of tâpokeyimoh – to have faith, sohkihteheh – to be fearless, to have a strong heart, and nâkatohkeh – to pay attention, to take care.​
