Saskatoon, Canada — Remai Modern is thrilled to partner with the Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) in Edmonton to develop and present a joint 2020 Biennial of Contemporary Art exhibition. This is the first time the biennial is expanding outside of Alberta.

“Working with the AGA to broaden the biennial is an incredible opportunity for Remai Modern to collaborate and supports our curatorial team in undertaking studio visits with artists throughout the region,” said Sandra Fraser, Remai Modern Curator (Collections). “We look forward to seeing what the submission process brings forward.”

Working with the theme of borders, the biennial team is seeking submissions from Prairie artists, physically or otherwise within, from, or in proximity to the borders of Treaty 4, Treaty 6, Treaty 7, Treaty 8 and Treaty 10. The call encourages artists to use the following information as a guideline for submissions:

“A border can draw a distinction; define an area; define a practice; define a state of mind. A border is a separation between two realms but it’s also the point where they meet. Borders can be metaphysical, geopolitical, geographical, arbitrary, fluid and calcified.

“What does it mean to cross a border? What does it mean to have a border cross you? How are some borders prioritized over others? What are the borders we cross every day without even realizing? What is it to cross the border between conscious and unconscious life? What is it to cross provincial borders; territorial borders? How are these experiences personalized or universal? Artists are encouraged to think of borders in the largest possible sense.”

The biennial will be presented in two concurrent exhibitions, on view at the AGA and Remai Modern in the fall of 2020.

AGA staff Lindsey V. Sharman, Curator, and Franchesca Hebert-Spence, Adjunct Curator of Indigenous Arts, will be joined by Sandra Fraser, Curator (Collections) at Remai Modern, and Felicia Gay, Guest Curator for Remai Modern, as curators for the 2020 Biennial.
