Jean-Philippe Deneault: Andy Warhol and Jazz
An interest in jazz music on the part of artists such as Larry Rivers, Alex Katz and Jean-Michel Basquiat is well known and shows up in their work. This affinity is less obvious in the case of Andy Warhol, whose work is more often associated with the mechanical quality of reproduction that characterizes it. We will demonstrate how an examination of the fluidity, flexibility and rhythm, in short, the style, of album covers Warhol produced for recordings by guitarist Kenny Burrell in the late 1950s can expand our appreciation of the iconic artist’s work.
About Jean-Philippe Deneault:
Deneault is a communications specialist who lives and works in Saskatoon and has mostly worked with not-for-profit arts and cultural organizations or government agencies. In July 2019, he was one of three emerging francophone curators chosen to represent Western Canada in a Curatorial Incubator in Pointe-de-l’Église, Nova Scotia. Deneault regularly publishes interviews and exhibition reviews in a number of art publications and newspapers, as well as catalogue entries, exhibition text and artists portraits for artists-run-centers and galleries. An avid record collector, he has a keen interest in the artworks featured on album covers. In May 2006, Deneault was scheduled to speak at a conference of the Canadian Society for Aesthetics held at York University on the topic of Andy Warhol and Jazz Music. Due to unforeseen circumstances, he had to cancel his talk, but he is thrilled to finally have the chance to publicly share his updated research on the matter with the Remai Modern patrons.
