Core Function

The Interpretive Planner & Programs Manager is responsible for the development and implementation of interpretive plans for the museum, advocating for holistic, visitor-centered experiences across all content platforms. Provide leadership to the Learning & Engagement team and is a subject matter expert regarding visitor behaviours across the organisation.

Scope & Major Responsibilities

  1. Leads the development and implementation of in-gallery wide interpretive deliverables including in-gallery texts, interactive and resources and audio tours, videos and online resources.
  2. Works collaboratively to develop interpretive plans for all exhibitions or special projects.
  3. Researches and maintains knowledge of new strategies, methods and developments in interpretive planning.
  4. Seeks internal and external feedback on the interpretive plan to identify improvement opportunities. 
  5. Develops, implements, manages and updates plans, goals and priorities for a comprehensive learning and engagement program (on-site and off-site), which recognizes and responds to a diverse audience needs to fulfil both contextual and interpretative functions including the identification of costs, funding sources and staffing levels.
  6. Participates in strategy and development, policy review, and collaboratively develops rationales and business cases to support significant learning and engagement initiatives.
  7. Manages assigned staff, hires, assigns work schedules, plans for future workforce needs and participates in the preparation of business planning. Plans, organizes, directs, monitors and evaluates the work of staff and disciplinary action when required.
  8. Leads the development of exhibition related, audience focused programs such as talks, lectures, symposia, screenings and special projects activities and oversees the use of the learning studios and Cameco Play Area. Ensures programs design meets the needs of a diverse community and are safe welcoming to all.
  9. Contributes to communications, marketing, and sponsorship of Learning & Engagement programs and other projects.
  10. Participates in the preparation of, and monitors section Budget
  11. Contributes to the development of grants, funding requests, and reporting as required.
  12. Provides program content information, reviews sponsorship, and other fund development packages to ensure content accuracy.
  13. Supports and promotes the health and safety of employees in accordance with the Saskatchewan Employment Act, Saskatchewan Health Regulations and Standards, Occupational Health & Safety Regulations and Remai Modern administrative Occupational Health & Safety policies and departmental procedures. Maintains and monitors programs which impact employee and public health and safety.
  14. Steward’s relationships with key stakeholders’ funders and donors.
  15. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. Masters Degree in art history, fine arts, art education, interpretive planning museum or cultural studies. PhD or Advanced degree in arts or museum management would be considered an asset.
  2. Seven years to nine years of progressively responsible related experience in development and delivery of innovative interpretive strategies and the managing staff and public programming,
  3. Level 3 OHS Supervision and Safety – WorkSafe Saskatchewan
  4. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered
  5. Strong knowledge of Indigenous, Canadian, and international modern and contemporary art.
  6. Thorough knowledge of current national education and access activities and public art museum practices.
  7. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment
  8. Demonstrated innovation, creative thinking and collaboration skills
  9. Ability to communicate effectively
  10. Ability to write in plain language, producing clear, concise, logical and grammatically correct materials. Using a variety of writing styles, editing techniques as appropriate to the circumstance and the intended readership.
  11. Demonstrated ability to build and foster effective relationships and networks.
  12. Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  13. Demonstrated organizational and planning skills.
  14. Thorough knowledge of and non-profit organization operations.
  15. Thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting, budgeting and financial procedures.
  16. Demonstrated ability to plan, direct, coordinate, monitor and evaluate the work of professional and technical staff.
  17. Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and consultation through problem-solving, consensus, stakeholder involvement and dialogue.
