Anton Vidokle: Citizens of the Cosmos
In association with its pre-launch programming, Remai Modern invited artists to realize original projects exclusively for online viewing. Through these commissions, the museum considered its website as an extension of its physical space and onsite program. Mobile and experimental, this online gallery allowed for direct, personal encounters with art while connecting artists and audiences across the globe.
From 2016-2020, the museum presented projects by: Ryan Gander, Tammi Campbell, Tanya Lukin Linklater, Thomas Hirschhorn, Taysir Batniji, Pedro Barateiro, Kara Uzleman, Rosa Barba, Amanda Beech, Ellen Moffat, Duane Linklater, Lynne Marsh, Raqs Media Collective, Ahlam Shibli, Ann Lislegaard, Anton Vidokly, Dave McKenzie, Laakkuluk Williamson-Bathory and Kelly Nipper.
Commissioned specifically for Remai Modern’s website, Citizens of the Cosmos is a continuation of Anton Vidokle’s exploration of Cosmism—a radical philosophical and cultural movement that emerged in early 20th-century Russia. This work takes the form of an illustrated script of a film project by Vidokle, currently in production in Tokyo.
Citizens of the Cosmos is based on the article, Our Affirmations” written by Alexander Svyatogor, first published in Biocosmist in 1922. The drawings are by Tyler Boss, with layout by Alan Woo. The soundtrack is “Prolog i Himlen” by Else Marie Pade from her 1962 album, Faust Suite.

Anton Vidokle is an artist and editor of e-flux journal. Born in Moscow, Vidokle currently lives and works in New York and Berlin. Vidokle’s work has been exhibited internationally at dOCUMENTA(13) and the 56th Venice Biennale. His films have been presented at numerous international exhibitions and festivals including Bergen Assembly in Norway, Shanghai Biennale in China, the Berlin International Film Festival and Forum Expanded in Germany, Gwangju Biennale in South Korea. His work has been also been shown at the Centre Pompidou, France; Tate Modern, United Kingdom; Garage Museum, Russia; Istanbul Biennial, Turkey; and Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Germany.
