Tino Sehgal
Tino Sehgal is a leading international figure working in the realm of live arts. His acclaimed body of work consists of “constructed situations” — ephemeral art experiences activated through encounters between the museum visitor and the individuals enacting his work. His playful and often unexpected situations have been enacted by museum guards, tour guides, gallerists, dancers and even children.

Sehgal’s practice challenges the museum and its audiences to reconsider the way art is produced, presented and received. For Sehgal, the live encounter is paramount, with his artworks existing in the realm of affect rather than material objects. He seeks to preserve the integrity of his practice through a basic principle: there are no materials created in association with his work. The enduring impressions of his artwork reside only in the memories of the visitors and the bodies of those enacting them.
Remai Modern will mount three works that span the breadth of his practice: Yet untitled, This Situation (solo) and This Success/This Failure.
Yet untitled is enacted by: Liz Kinoshita and Erik Nevin with local dancers: Peace Akintade, Promita Das, Kirk Ford, Aunya Jayde, Mitchell Larsen, Annika Lessing, Bryn Rawlyk, Dean Stockdale, Tatum Wildeman and Megan Zong. The artist has also curated a selection of sculpture from Remai Modern’s collection, on view in the museum’s atrium and Connect Gallery. Click here to learn about the selected works.

Tino Sehgal is a German-Indian artist born in 1976 in London, England. He currently lives and works in Berlin.
His work has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, recently at MdbK, Leipzig (2022) Bleinheim Palace, UK (2021); Odawara Art Foundation, Japan (2019); Officine Grandi Riparazioni, Turin (2018); V-A-C Foundation, Moscow, Russia (2017); Fondation Beyeler, Switzerland (2017); Jemaa el-Fna, Marrakesh; Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2016); Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2015); Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlin (2015); Pinacoteca, Sao Paulo and CCBB, Rio de Janeiro (2014); Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing (2013); Tate Modern, London (2012); and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2010) and Kunsthaus Bregenz (2006), among others. In 2018 he co-curated a series of live works entitled A Prelude to the Shed which heralded the opening of The Shed’s permanent home in New York City.
