Remai Modern in Saskatoon awarded $3 million from the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund
Saskatoon, Canada — The Government of Canada announced today the allocation of $3 million from the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund for Remai Modern, Art Gallery of Saskatchewan.
The announcement was made by the Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness and Member of Parliament (Regina–Wascana) on behalf of the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage. The event took place in an office building at River Landing, within sight of the new Remai Modern museum, where construction is nearing completion.
“The Government of Canada is committed to investing in arts and culture infrastructure,” said the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage. “We are pleased to support the creation of a world-class art museum in Saskatoon while creating jobs for the middle class and growing our economy.”
“Today’s investment will increase Remai Modern’s capacity to preserve its extensive collection while ensuring it is accessible to all,” said the Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness and Member of Parliament (Regina–Wascana). “I look forward to coming back to Saskatoon once the museum opens to see first-hand this new, state-of-the-art facility.”
“We are grateful for this significant support from the Government of Canada, enabling Remai Modern to function according to its potential,” said Gregory Burke, Remai Modern Executive Director & CEO. “Large gallery spaces with specialized display and art handling features are necessary for us to present international touring exhibitions, while equipment such as the vault systems will allow the museum to protect its art collection and attract significant art loans.”
This funding announcement brings the total federal government contribution to Remai Modern to more than $16 million. In 2013, the museum received more than $13 million from Infrastructure Canada, through the Building Canada Fund.
About the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund
As part of the 2016 budget, the federal government announced that over the next two years, it would invest an additional $168.2 million in cultural infrastructure through the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund (CCSF).
CCSF supports the improvement of physical conditions for artistic creativity and innovation through the improvement, renovation and construction of arts and heritage facilities, as well as the acquisition of specialized equipment. By supporting improvements to our country’s cultural spaces, the CCSF increases access for Canadians to performing arts, visual arts, media arts, museum collections and heritage displays.
