Remai Modern to host first Saskatchewan performances by groundbreaking artist and choreographer Yvonne Rainer
Saskatoon, Canada — In October, Remai Modern is honoured to host avant-garde dancer, choreographer and filmmaker Yvonne Rainer’s first performances in Saskatchewan. The influential artist, now in her 80s, continues to provoke and surprise. Remai Modern will showcase Continuous Project: Sixty Years, a performance of early and recent work with Rainer’s group, informally known as the “Raindears.”
“Yvonne Rainer’s contributions to the art world, particularly in the fields of dance and film, are significant. She has carved a distinct path in art and life for more than 60 years,” said Troy Gronsdahl, Associate Curator (Live Programs). “These two performances at Remai Modern mark a rare opportunity to experience a leading artist up close and in person as she continues to defy expectations and artistic limits.”
Remai Modern will host two performances of Continuous Project: Sixty Years in the museum’s Riverview Room:
– Saturday, October 5, 7 PM
– Sunday, October 6, 2 PM
The Sunday afternoon performance will be followed by a conversation with Rainer.
Tickets go on sale August 28 and are available online at remaimodern.org or at the museum’s admissions desk. Tickets are $25 for Remai Modern members and $37 for non-members.
About Yvonne Rainer
Yvonne Rainer (b. 1934, San Francisco) is a co-founder of the Judson Dance Theatre, a New York City-based collective of dancers and artists who challenged modern dance, probing the boundaries of the art form and charting new directions in dance, visual art and music.
Following a 15-year career as a choreographer and dancer, Rainer transitioned to filmmaking, making seven feature-length films. She returned to dance in 2000 and continues to create new works.
Rainer’s dances and films have been shown in New York venues including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Dance Theatre Workshop, Danspace Project and MoMA, as well as art spaces around the world. Rainer is the recipient of numerous awards, including two Guggenheim Fellowships, a MacArthur Fellowship and the Merce Cunningham Award. She currently lives and works in New York.
